Inktober Western.

For Inktober this year I decided to do a series of Old Western themed drawings. I knew from the start I wouldn't be able to fit in all 31 drawings required to complete the Inktober task fully, but regardless I figured it would be a good way of getting to draw something I haven't had a lot of experience of. Using the official word prompts, it is my goal to create a loose storyline even though the drawings may not appear in chronological order.

Here are the first few, some of which I decided to add a little vintage-effect colour to. I have presented them here, not in the order they were drawn, but rather in some semblance of storyline order.

Carlos Ezquerra Tribute.

If you're a follower of this blog, I'm sure you're already well aware that the comic world lost one of it's greats last week in the form of Judge Dredd co-creator Carlos Ezquerra.

Ezquerra brought a modern European 'spaghetti western' feel to British comics in the 1970's. Before him, the artwork British War comics hadn't changed for 25 years, the art in British Sci-Fi comics was stuck in a Gerry Anderson-style gleaming future. After him, war comics seemed more real & sci-fi had a used dirty look about it.

His work on a lowly British boys paper could have stood shoulder to shoulder with the greats of Metal Hurlant. Those early Strontium Dog episodes look as fresh now as they did when he first drew them over 40 years ago.

He will (in all likelyhood) be remembered mostly for the fact that he created the look for Judge Dredd, & in so doing changed the face & the future of British comics forever, but for me it was his work on the aforementioned Strontium Dog that I will remember most fondly, & for that reason I put aside my plans for the first day of  Inktober last week & drew this instead.

Just did this A3 marker drawing commission of Judge Dredd for a client. An A3 single character marker commission like this is £150 plus postage, message me if you're interested.

I did this little bit of fun to celebrate the Big Guy's 80th birthday... & he doesn't look a day over 28.

Man-Thing v Ulysses Bloodstone private commission

Not much to say about this one, except that I really enjoyed capturing the gnarly look of the Man-Thing.

Beachhead private commission.

This one was fun to do. Beachhead is a character from the G.I. Joe universe & was the protagonist in the very first Marvel comic job I did, back in the Summer of 1988, so it was interesting to revisit him.

Batman and Firefly

I was very pleased to be asked to do this particular private commission, since the featured villain 'Firefly' was the first Bat-villain I ever drew when I started working for DC Comics back in the mid 90's.

Judge Dredd private commission

Rambo & Dutch, private commission.

Here's my latest private commission piece. The client wanted a piece showing the Sylvester Stallone character John Rambo (from the film First Blood etc) & the Arnold Schwarzenegger character  'Dutch' ( from the movie Predator). Since both characters are soldiers who fit comfortably into a jungle setting, that is what I decided to do. The client wanted some kind of military vehicle in there too, so I decided a helicopter as a nod to Arnie's classic line "Get to da choppaaaaagh!" from Predator would do nicely.

If anyone wants something similar, the price for this sort of thing is now £350+postage.

Commission list open again

I am opening my commissions list, so if there are any of you who have had commission requests turned down recently, or anyone just considering having a commission, now is the time to get your requests in. Prices are now as follows;-

A4 single figure marker drawing. £120 + p&p. These will have some background elements, & will generally speaking be in black & white with a little highlight colour added if I feel it works.

A4 two character marker drawing £175 + p&p. Similar to the single character piece, except it has 2 characters.... obviously

A3 single character marker drawing £200 + p&p. Again, similar to the A4 single character, except it's bigger, some might say "better for framing", I couldn't possibly comment.

A3 print quality art £450 + p&p. Bit difficult to explain this one, basically what you get is a piece of art which would sit comfortably along side any artwork I have produced for Marvel, DC or 2000AD. There are no limitations on the content (up to a point... don't ask for "every single member of the Legion Of Superheroes, EVER!", just use your common sense) so if you are wanting cover recreations, this is the one you want.
